Most entrepreneurs think they merely need to create an idea, write a business plan, raise capital, and build a business. If only it was that easy. 

Throughout the years, we have written many plans. One was approved by the IRS as a $200M tax shelter and another was approved for global humanitarian funding for over $1B. Both were startups.  Every startup is different, and entrepreneurs can’t use a template or even the same process to design the business plan or the launch of a startup. 

We have also conducted strategic due diligence on plans for investors and commercial loan officers. We have been in the room when investors ask entrepreneurs basic strategic questions that are often not found in the business plan, but even more alarming, never considered by the entrepreneur who is surprised by the question and unable to provide an adequate answer. For example, if asked to describe the strategy, the answer “x dollars in revenue” is not an acceptable answer.
